Franciscan Aid has been able to work closely with the schools, Boys Home and community of Bethlehem. In 2009 Franciscan Aid funded 10 computers for Hope School and a fridge freezer for the Boys Home.

‘It was a great joy to see these projects through and especially as I can see how much Franciscan Aid’s help is really appreciated. Hope School is such a poor school and teaches only the poorest boys and girls, almost none of whom can pay school fees. The Boys’ Home takes in boys from poor and broken backgrounds, every one of whom I know personally. I did a bit of home visiting this week and the homes in the refugee camp would make anyone cry: some of the boys come from the camp but are safer in the Home.’

In 2012 Franciscan Aid supported the Community Centre in Zababdeh:

The funds will purchase a wide variety of furniture and equipment for the day care centre new ground floor area of the Rays of Hope Community Centre in Zababdeh in the West Bank eg small chairs for children and chairs for adults, tables, cupboards shelves, carpets, dvd/tv, floor mokquette, ball pool, fridge, stove, heater/cooler, slide, plastic “wendy “ house are examples. All these items are available and will be purchased locally in Palestine. The ground floor of the new centre is in the process of being completed and will shortly be plastered and finished.

Then in 2013 playground equipment:
In Bethlehem there is nowhere for children to play except in the street. The Wi’am park has been developed to give children a safe place to play. There are two refugee camps within 200 yards of the play area. The funds, if granted, will be used to pay for repairs and to purchase further play equipment in the playground which has been developed at the centre. There is also a need for tables and chairs for the outside area, which is under cover, so that it can be used for activities and meetings for children, women, youth and others.
The centre is sited right next to part of the separation wall and very near to a checkpoint. It is a place of hope for many families who seek help for issues including – economic problems due to high unemployment, domestic violence, trauma, delinquency. It is also a place of tranquillity set against the back-drop of the wall and families can come and sit in the gardens. There are 100 volunteers at Wi’am, who work as counsellors and mediators in the local community. There are summer camps held and hundreds of children attend over several weeks. Activities include drama, arts and crafts and games. So in conclusion the funds will be used to improve and enlarge the current play area and purchase tables and chairs for the adjacent area.
Since 2019 Franciscan Aid has been able to fund hearing equipment for a unit for 16 hearing impaired children, the only unit in Hebron: illuminated magnifiers for visually impaired children in another unit. Cupboards, air conditioning, and laptops for schools in Bethlehem; washing machine, TV, seats, beds, a cooker, dining tables and chairs for the Boys Home. This year Franciscan Aid supported the Bethlehem community by helping set up a food bank.
