In 2013 Franciscan Aid received the following request:
‘A young man who is the son of a poor rural village farmer in The Gambia who has completed his High School education. He is seeking funding for a vocational course in Tourism and Hotel Management, as the tourist industry in the Gambia is a vibrant and growing sector. His wages will support both him and his family and give them all the opportunity of a decent standard of living and escape from the poverty trap.’

Also in 2014 the request for another young man in similar circumstances needed funds to study for a Diploma in Computer and IT in Business Management.
Both courses were a year long and it was agreed by Franciscan Aid that the two young men would be able to sustain their own living and that of their families.
